Create An Enchanting Ice Fairy – Part 3

This is the final part of a three part tutorial on how to create an enchanting Ice Fairy. If you’ve missed the first two parts, don’t worry, the index to all three parts are listed below. We’ll see you back here in a bit.

Step 83 Scale the size and place it on the head of the ice fairy.

Step 84 This is how it should look like once it is done.

Step 85 Open another butterfly image. This time, we are going to cut out the wings. Use Magic Wand Tool (press W) to select the white area.

Step 86 Press Ctrl + Shift + I to inverse the selection.

Step 87 Use the Lasso Tool(press L) and hold Alt to deselect unwanted areas, leaving only one side of the wings available.


Step 88 Drag it to the composition and scale it to the desired size. Move it under “Layer 2 copy”.


Step 89 Press Ctrl + J to duplicate another copy of “Layer1”(Wings).

Step 90 Go to Filter > Artistic > Cutout. 

Step 91 My setting for the wings is Number of Levels:8, Edge Simplicity:1, Edge Fidelity:3.


Step 92 Go to Filter > Noise > Median.

Step 93 Set the Radius amount to 2 pixels.


Step 94 After that, go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap.

Step 95 The setting is Highlight Strength:10, Detail:8, Smoothness:8.


Step 96 Press Ctrl + J to duplicate a copy of “Layer 1 copy”.

Step 97 Go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome.

Step 98 Set Chrome detail to 3 and Smoothness to 8.


Step 99 Press Ctrl + B to change wing’s color.


Step 100 Select “Layer 1 copy” and temporarily off the “Layer 1 copy 3” by clicking on the eye icon.

Step 101 Use the previous settings to change the wings color again.


Step 102 Change “Layer 1” to Hard Light mode and Opacity to 40%.

Step 103 Change “Layer 1 copy” Opacity to 35%.

Step 104 Change “Layer 1 copy 3” to Soft light mode and 45% of Opacity.

Step 105 Select “Layer 1 copy 3” layer and go to Filter > Stylize > Find Edges.

Step 106 Press and hold “Shift” to select these 3 layers.

Step 107 Drag towards the new layer icon to duplicate another set of wing layer.

Step 108 Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to flip the wing.


Step 109 Press V to select Move Tool.


Step 110 Press Crtl + T to transform and move the wing to where you see appopriate.


Step 111 Go back to “Layer 2 copy” and click on the icon as shown to add layer mask.

Step 112 Press B(Brush tool) to mask the fairy’s belly and make sure you change the Opacity value to make it look more realistic. In this masking process, I changed the Opacity value from 5% to 55% to complete the whole masking process.


Step 113 Create shadows for the wings and move it behind the fairy.
