Every March, the world celebrates Women’s History Month. It’s a time to recognize the women who have devoted their lives in pursuit of breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, producing art, searching for truth, and paving the way for future generations of women.

This celebration is not only about historical milestones but acknowledging and supporting the women making incredible strides today.

In this article, we’ll explore six different ways to celebrate Women’s History Month. Let's show our appreciation for the amazing women who have made and continue to make a difference in our world.

Explore the history of women’s rights

Women’s rights have come a long way over the past century. We cannot begin to feel gratitude for how far we have come if we don’t know where we came from.

The right to vote, access to education, the ability to work outside the home, or have a bank account – these were all fought for and earned in the name of women’s rights.

Even though there are still many challenges faced by women in the world today, we can gain a deeper understanding by educating ourselves about our history, our past challenges, and how we can work towards a more equitable future for all women.

Attend women-led events and talks

A simple, yet effective way to champion women’s rights is to listen. Attend women-led events and talks to support women in leadership positions, and to hear what they have to say about certain issues or topics.

Women have been historically underrepresented in many fields including finance, politics, information technology, and engineering. But these are industries that affect all people – men and women.

Attending events and talks led by women provides a chance to speak about gender-specific perspectives, and uplift more women in their careers to take charge of leadership roles and expand into male-dominated fields.

Read books by women authors

In the literary world, male authors have often demonstrated how little they know about females – be it the female anatomy or depicting them as overtly sexualized, shallow side characters.

This is why we have to read widely to gain a deeper understanding of the literary works published today. Do your bookshelves hold books written by women?

This month, make an active decision to read books by women writers. You’ll be sure to discover how your worldview might change through the perspective and the words of a woman.

Watch movies and documentaries about influential women

Throughout history, women have contributed so much to society. But it’s not surprising that many of these achievements get overshadowed or undervalued.

Watching movies and documentaries about the lives of women who have made changes in society – whether in the political landscape, art, or science – will help us gain a more nuanced understanding of the challenges women face today.

There are many movies and documentaries available that explore the lives and achievements of women who have played vital roles in society. For instance, the 2016 movie titled Hidden Figures told the incredible story of three female African-American mathematicians’ roles during the early years of the U.S. space race.

Share stories of inspiring women on social media

Celebrating Women’s History Month doesn’t have to focus on the first wave of women's rights activists. All of us have had women in our lives that have been great influences, and we continue to witness inspiring women make history each day.

A simple yet powerful way to celebrate the achievements of women is to spread the good word about their inspiring stories.

By sharing stories of women who have broken barriers and challenged stereotypes, we can help to inspire others to do the same in their fields.

Volunteer for or donate to women-focused charities

There are countless charities and organizations that work to improve women’s health, education, and economic empowerment.

By donating or volunteering our time and skills to these organizations, we can help to make a difference in the lives of women in need and contribute to positive change.

This March, take Women’s History Month as an opportunity to look up your local organizations. Pick one that you most resonate with and give back to the community through your time, money, or skill.

Happy Women’s History Month!

It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of women past and present. It’s an opportunity to learn, share, and celebrate progress, and continue working towards a more just and equitable future.

Celebrate and uplift women in all their diversity and continue to work towards a world where all women can thrive.
